Sleep Over at the Museum

The girls went to a Girl Scout Sleepover at the Museum of Nature & History in Fair Park. The Museum is the result of the 2006 mergers of the Dallas Museum of Natural History (established in 1936), The Science Place (1946) and the Dallas Children's Museum (1995). They earned this as part of making their Girl Scout Cookie Quota. (Parents also pitched in some..)

The museum just happens to be having a Dinosaur exhibit, so what a great time to also get some requirements knocked out for the Dinosaur Try It!

The girls had a chance to check out dinosaur footprint sizes, make a fossil, dig for "fossils", and visit life-sized dinosaurs. Then they slept at the museum!

Why so crazy about try its?

First, I'd just like to say that Girls Scouts is SO MUCH more than patches. We are blessed to be a part of a troop that really cares about our girls growing in ALL facets. I couldn't ask for more.

So why so focused on try its? This year I went back to work full time. A lot of the things Big K and I used to do together when we had more time (explore, visit places, try things) started to be lost. When I took a second job, I knew I would have to do something. Try its to the rescue. Now you might think a Mom with too much to do wouldn't add more to her plate. But it's been perfect. They give our little quests a direction. We talk about what we want to do, we plan, we explore together. And on the Mom side, it makes me follow through. The specific requirements make it hard to settle for "watching a show" instead. (Typically, we drag little K along, and it's had a nice side effect of getting her interested in Brownies too.) At first, I just told about these adventures on my family blog. Then this blog was started because Big K's Brownie Try-it Quest has taken over my family blog. In my search of current links for Brownies-- I have come across many dead links, out of stock discontinued badges, and also great current resources. I'd like to create a current log of what we are doing, and also-- provide some tips and links that might help someone else. If possible without drowning my family blog with Brownies!
